I know I’m not unusual but I really am terrified to go to the dentist. It has become a huge joke with my family and friends but as soon as I even think of an injection or the sound of the dentists drill I shudder. The problem is I really need to visit the dentist, it’s been years and I know I’ll need to get something done before it’s too late. It’s a catch 22. Can hypnosis help?

I always teach my clients self hypnosis so that when you sit in the dentists chair you can go into hypnosis and totally detach yourself from the situation. It is one of the cases where I teach people to switch off pain.

If you are looking for a dentist contact me and I can give you the name of a very nice dentist who is very sympathetic to people who are afraid to go to the dentist. On a few occasions he let me go into his surgery with a client who was extremely nervous, he played my music in the background and gave me a few minutes for a hypnotic induction. When the dental work finished the lady was amazed at how little she felt and how quickly the time passed. As she has now become experienced in self hypnosis she now goes to the dentist on her own without any problems.

A quick word on using hypnosis to remove pain – It is important to remember that pain is the body’s way of telling us there is a problem. Removing pain using hypnosis should only be done when appropriate.

Self hypnosis? How can this work? I don’t understand how someone can hypnotise themself. And then when you are in hypnosis how can you get yourself out?

One of the myths about hypnosis is that you have no control. This is wrong. In fact I consider that all hypnosis is self hypnosis. Even if I am facilitating the hypnotic induction the person being hypnotised must want hypnosis to happen and be willing to participate.

I often meet people socially who would challenge me, almost daring me to try and hypnotise them. I never accept, because if someone wants to fight hypnosis they can. Once a person has decide it is not going to happen I’m not going to engage in a battle of wills and trick them into hypnosis.

In learning self hypnosis you are learning to take control of the relaxation process in your own mind and body. Think of it as learning how to control your day dreaming, learning to control how much you want detach from your surroundings and how long you want to stay that way for. You can also choose your own post hypnotic suggestion that will benefit you when you decide to end hypnosis depending what you are using self hypnosis to help you achieve.

I say "learn" self hypnosis because that is exactly what you do, and just like any skill the more you practise to more you improve.
