I play rugby and as my user name suggests I play outhalf. This season has just been a disaster so far. My confidence is shattered, my decision making terrible, I know I’m trying too hard, nothing seems to work and I’m just caught in a rut. My coach is constantly on my case and it doesn’t help that he regularly reminds me that so and so from the seconds is pushing me for my place or the kid from the 19’s has a great future ahead of him. Can hypnotherapy help get my confidence back and help my game? Thanks.

If you are approaching each game worrying about playing badly then that is the most likely outcome. Certainly your coach is not helping either. I prefer to chanage how a person thinks before playing any sport. I like to reframe the thinking process to focus on "if I play my best I can win" or something similar. You may have read elswhere on the site the way I approch therapy and it certainly applies to sports hypnosis; set goals, build belief and remove any negative thinking.

If you look at the most successful individuals or teams in any sport the one thing that stands out is self belief. Not necessarily in an arrogant fashion but simply an unshakable belief in their ability to do the right thing at the right time. Manchester Utd. spring to mind. How often do they score a winner in injury time? Tiger Woods (before his personal problems) honestly believed he was going to win every time he competed.

I don’t like to hear sports people talk about "fear of losing" being a motivation, I honestly believe anyone can play with more freedom when they focus on success and all of the positive feelings that go with it.
