I have been looking at your website and considering hypnosis. I have a question about language. I am living in Ireland 6 years now and I have no problems speaking, understanding or communicating through English. Most of the time I think in my own language and then quickly translate in my head. Does this cause a problem with hypnosis? I don’t know if my subconscious understands English.

If you can communicate in English hypnotherapy can work. I have completed successful hypnotherapy with many people who did not have English as their natural tongue. Off the top of my head I can think of clients from Spain, Portugal, Germany, Poland, The Czech Republic, Lithuania and Slovakia and if I check my records there may be others.

During hypnotherapy many people experience thoughts or memories in their own language. In the same way that the conscious mind is still active enough to decide to accept or reject a hypnotic suggestion the conscious mind is active enough to translate your thoughts to English and facilitate successful hypnotherapy.

If you have any doubts try this. Think of a memory from a time in your life before you learned to speak English, maybe an early memory from school or a holiday as a child. It doesn’t matter what language you are using to recall the memory. Could you translate the memory into English and tell me about it? If you can you’ll be able to do the very same in hypnosis.
